India Issues Flood Alert to Pakistan Amid Rising Sutlej River Levels (Social Media)

National News: India has issued an alert to Pakistan regarding possible floods in the Sutlej River. According to official sources, this warning has been released due to heavy rains and excess water from major dams in the northern states. On Tuesday, India sent this alert to Pakistan on humanitarian grounds. There is a high possibility of flooding in the Sutlej river on Wednesday. This information was transported to Pakistan through the Ministry of External Affairs of India (Mea).

Alerts sent earlier also

According to a report, India had earlier sent three more warnings to Pakistan last week. These alerts were issued in view of the possibility of flooding in the Tawi River. If sources are to be believed, due to heavy rains in Himachal and Punjab, the water level of many rivers and small drains of the state has come up significantly. These include Ravi, Sutlej and Beas. Due to heavy rains, the rise in water level of rivers has posed a threat of floods in the low-lying areas.

Bhakra dam water increased by 3 feet in 24 hours

Due to heavy rains, the water level in Bhakra dam is also increasing rapidly. The water level has increased by 3 feet in the last 24 hours. The dam authority has issued an alert in view of this and security measures have been intensified. Experts say that if the water level continues to rise at this speed, it will be mandatory to release excess water, which may further increase the risk of floods in the lower areas.

India sent information on humanitarian grounds

After the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, India suspended the exchange of regular hydrological data under the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. In this attack, 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. However, despite this, India has sent this latest warning on humanitarian grounds. According to sources, "The purpose of this information is only to prevent loss of life and property in Pakistan."

Background of Indus Waters Treaty

The Indus Water Treaty was signed in 1960 due to the World Bank's mediation between the two neighboring countries India and Pakistan. Under this treaty, the water distribution system of Indus river system was fixed. The process of cooperation has weakened due to increasing tension between the two countries over the years. Nevertheless, this step of India shows that it is willing to share information from a human point of view to protect neighboring countries from disaster and to ensure the safety of people in natural disasters like floods.
